Request for Letter of Recommendation

Writing letters of recommendation is an honor and privilege that I am happy to do for my students.

This form is a quick way to gather the most important information needed for me to write a strong, personalized letter for you. This form does not autogenerate letters or anything of that sort—I will follow up with questions (typically asking you to send me documents like your CV and Statement of Purpose).

I spend 1-2 hours minimum per letter, which means I need some lead time. Please talk to me at least 1 month prior to the letter due date. If I have less than 1 month's notice, I may not be able to write you a letter.

I will let you know if I can’t write a good letter for you. You don’t need to have gotten an A in my class—participation, integrity, humor, improvement, hard work, class contributions, extracurriculars are all admirable qualities that I am happy to comment on and often aren’t reflected in grades. On that note, the best letters come from instructors or advisors who know you well. If we haven’t really worked together or I haven’t had an opportunity to observe your work (e.g., as a student in my class, on a research project, or in an extracurricular), I won’t be able to write a good letter for you and there might be somebody else who can write you a stronger letter.
